Are senior leaders and HR really aware of how line managers are speaking to their teams?

Not the policies on paper. The day-to-day tone. The offhand comments. The "just get it done" with no room for how someone's actually doing.

Because there's a gap, and it's a big one, between what leadership believes is happening on the ground, and what employees are actually experiencing from the person they report to every day.

We're not robots from 9 to 5. We're people, all day, every day. And the way a line manager speaks to their team doesn't stay contained to work hours, it follows people home, into their evenings, into how they sleep, into how they show up the next morning.

The uncomfortable truth: most organisations invest heavily in leadership strategy, and almost nothing in how leaders communicate under pressure.

Manager capability isn't a soft skill. It's the difference between a team that trusts leadership and one that's quietly disengaging, or even leaving.

So the question for senior leaders and HR isn't "do we have a wellbeing policy?"

It's: do you actually know how your managers are talking to your people?

Because your staff already know the answer.
